Flaxseed and fish oil have many benefits. The major reason they are good for your body is because they are both high in Omega-3 fatty acids.
Omega-3 essential fatty acids- "good" fats that have been shown to benefit your heart. These fatty acids benefit your body and are important in helping it to function, but they cannot be produced by the body. For this reason it is important to have a good source of omega-3 acids which flaxseed oil provides. In some animal studies this Omega-3 has been shown to inhibit tumor growth. It is also suggested that Omega-3 fatty acids aide your cardiovascular system.
The down sides of these two products can be very dangerous. These bad side effects and dangers are listed below.
Flaxseed side effects consist of bruising and bleeding that can be very difficult to stop. You can also get headaches, diarrhea, and allergic reactions. Another down side of flaxseed is the slowing down of your absorption of medicine.
Fish oil down sides consist of indigestion or heartburn. You can also get an upset stomach. The biggest and most dangerous side effect of fish oil is contamination/mercury poisoning. Although the first three negative effects are bad, this is by far the most dangerous. Mercury poisoning can cause itching or burning, swelling, discoloration of skin, and even the pealing of skin in layers.
Clearly both fish oil and flaxseed oil have negative side effects, but in my opinion the risk of mercury poisoning outweighs all of the side effects of flaxseed. We need to take into account also that these two products do have very positive effects on people that use them also.
